It seems like a lifetime ago that you were a fresh-faced and eager-eyed first-year. And while, yes, your enthusiasm to study has definitely changed, there are some habits you’ve unknowingly picked up too.

Here are some bizarre things students do that we’ve all somehow agreed are OK.

#1 You Take Long Showers Because It’s Your Place To Think

It’s a sad world indeed when the only place to think straight is in the solitary confines of a shower. Showers are a great place for memorising notes  and having a cry where no one can hear you. Above all, it’s just a quiet and relaxing place to be. Who cares if your siblings are pounding on the door? THIS IS YOUR TIME, GOD DAMMIT.

#2 You Become A Master Procrastinator

You didn’t know the meaning of the word procrastination until you became a uni student. By the end of the year, you’ll have become so good at procrastinating that you can procrastinate while you’re procrastinating. It really is a talent. You learn how to watch Netflix through the guilt and develop a “she’ll be right” attitude to all your assignments.

#3 You’re Totally Fine With Bullshitting Through Your Assignments

So, you’ve had three months to complete this assignment. Now it’s the night before and nothing has been done. You’re such a pro at bullshitting through your essays at this point that you’re not even worried. You’ll just have to pull the dreaded all-nighter and get it done. Will it be the best essay ever? No. Will it get a distinction? Definitely not.

#4 You Spend $6.50 On A Coffee Order

You learn that you gotta do what you gotta do in order to get through your 8am class. And if that means ordering a double-shot vanilla iced latte then you’re OK with it. It’s for the greater good.

#5 You Go To Lectures In The Same Clothes You Slept In

You’ve pulled an all-nighter trying to complete that dreaded assignment and now you don’t know if you’re in a dream or real life. If they’re going to schedule your class for this early in the morning then it’s totally justified to wear your pyjamas. I mean, your PJ top can totally pass off as everyday clothes and tbh, they should feel blessed you even showed up this morning.

#6 Day Drinking

When else are you going to do it? At night? No way, you’re too tired for that. And you most likely have some sort of test to study for. It’s totally normal to head down to the uni bar after class to get some cheeky bevvies with the other sleep-deprived students. They have a bar at the university for a reason, duh.

#7 You Sit In The Back And Avoid Eye Contact

After your first year, you realise that it’s OK to not have friends. In fact, when you come to class you just want to be left alone. You sit in the dark at the back of the class like an angry gremlin, hoping that the lecturer doesn’t make you do those stupid ice breakers.

I’m running on three hours of sleep and haven’t had my $6.50 coffee yet, please don’t talk to me.

#8 Being Happy With Passing By 1%

You realise that results aren’t as important to you as they were back in high school. Why get mad about it? You’re still going to get your degree with a pass. After the first hectic year, you don’t care about getting high distinctions. It’s a miracle you haven’t dropped out yet so even if you pass your unit by just one point, it is a cause for celebration.
