In one of the many bad news items likely to come throughout the day, Marjorie Taylor Greene, a supporter of QAnon, has been elected to Congress, representing northwest Georgia. This makes her the first supporter of the conspiracy theory — which claims that Donald Trump is fighting a satanic ring of paedophiles who sex-traffic children — to hold office.

While the conspiracy may make you laugh, it is a very real danger. Since it first appeared on a 4chan forum in 2017, it has taken a life of its own and become a political ideology leading to real-world consequences. Believers have been the cause of kidnappings, a murder, and have actually made it harder for law enforcement to fight child trafficking.

Greene, a “future Republican star” and “real WINNER!” according to Trump, was a correspondent for American Truth Seekers — a conspiracy ‘news’ website which is now-defunct where she furthered QAnon theories. She has posted QAnon slogans and hashtags such as #trusttheplan and #savethechildren on her social media.

Greene has expressed racist, Islamophobic and anti-Semitic views. She has also incited violence against congresswoman Ilhan Omar, spread a conspiracy theory which falsely links Hillary Clinton to a string of ‘suspicious’ deaths, and claimed (again falsely) that Barack Obama is Muslim.

Greene’s win could help legitimise QAnon’s narrative, which Trump has already refused to denounce. This refusal was taken as an endorsement by QAnon believers, and other wins by candidates like Greene could add further weight to their views.

There are 26 other candidates also running for Congress who have either outwardly backed or given some credibility to QAnon theories.

People are obviously very upset about this, but it remains to be seen how successful other candidates will be.
