Canadian synth-pop duo Purity Ring have dropped a glitchy cover of ’90s house classic ‘Better Off Alone’ — and it works perfectly reimagined in their eerie soundscape.

The duo, who earlier this year released their third album Womb, have released an accompanying music video for the cover of the Alice DJ track — in a statement, they said it’s been on their to-do list for a long, long time.

“We have wanted to cover this song for years and it felt like it was time,” the band wrote (via Stereogum). “It’s been an influence on how we write and feel music since the beginning, and so for all the ways that joy and longing move, the truth is out there.”

The original track was released in 1999 as a side-project from a series of Dutch trance-pop producers, with vocals from JudithPronk: last year, we argued it was one of the best tracks of all-time.

In Purity Ring’s cover they down-play the Eurotrash and up the eerie, with singer Megan James really bringing out the existential loneliness at the song’s core. We love it.
