8 Pointless Things We Don’t Need To Bother With In Our Early 20s
Don't waste your best years on "meal prep".
We waste so much of our time when we’re young worrying about literally everything on Earth – what we should be doing, what we’re not doing, where we’re heading.
There are so many things that simply aren’t worth our time to worry about. Here are most of them in a handy list.
#1 Meal Prep
You may think that you need to spend your Sunday night chopping tiny pieces of carrot and zucchini and shredding chicken into five matching Tupperware containers with the same lid – no. You don’t.
You need to order two burritos through UberEats and have a Cornetto and cry a little bit. You don’t need to be worrying about eating healthy for the rest of the week – you just need to focus on remembering to brush your hair sometime before your 9am lecture tomorrow.
#2 Wearing Pricey Clothes
I mean, yes, you could have pants from YSL or that Gucci belt if you stopped eating, drinking, paying rent, and going literally anywhere and lived under a bridge. You don’t need to be wearing stuff that is stitched together with GOLDEN NEEDLES APPARENTLY – support the wonderful local brands in your area and remember that literally no one cares enough to worry about how much your shirt costs.
#3 Taking Photos
Have you ever been like, “oh god, I’m not taking enough photos! I should take more selfies of me in front of things so I never forget how good this moment was?” Or, “I should film MORE of this live music so I truly remain in the moment FOREVER”?
Do you see where I am going with this? Try your best to remain present, rather than pre-emptively stressing about how to best capture the moment where you were truly present.
#4 What Your Mates Are Doing When You’re Not Around
When we’re young, we feel like we should be everywhere at the same time: at every party, every gig, every after-work drinks. Sometimes we worry that when we aren’t around, we’re somehow missing vital parts of LIVING that can only be rectified by manically making plans and then burning yourself out – all because you can’t stomach the FOMO.
There have been some iconic things that you’ve missed out on, sure, but boy, there have been some good times that you’ve seen. Balance the two.
#5 Listening To ~Cool~ Tunes
We can all bow to that pressure of having to know every indie artist and only liking things that are just out of frame, but still in frame enough for other people to also like.
Here’s the truth: music manifests differently for every single person on this planet. If you are only listening to songs that you think have the tick of approval from the people that you surround yourself with, you’re missing out on experiencing your own special brand of art. Nothing is worth not doing the things you enjoy, and listening to music is a huge part of that.
#6 Wondering Where You’ll End Up
There’s no point stressing about your end game when you are in your 20s. Why? Because right now you’re writing the plot, not the conclusion. Enjoy the process.
#7 Meeting The Right People
So many of us can get preoccupied with the roles that people play in our life: should we have met the person that we will spend our life with by the age of 25? There is no “should” for those kinds of things, and putting too much pressure on your relationships can cause them to crack. You could miss something truly special simply because you were focusing too hard on trying to force something into being.
#8 Superannuation
No, I’m just kidding. We all need to worry about that as soon as humanely possible.
