Please Enjoy Patrick Stewart Running A Space Winery In The First Trailer For ‘Picard’
Space winery!
Star Trek has always been known for its flights of fancy. But Picard, the new Amazon Prime Video series, tackles what many millennials will consider the most extraordinary fantasy of all — retirement.
Yep, given that the world’s probably going to collapse within the next five decades and we’re all wracked by the horrors of increasingly casual, unstable work, it sure is nice to indulge in the idea that one day we’ll be able to kick back our still-intact feet and chill for a few years.
That’s what Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) is doing in the first trailer for the series that takes his name. As the owner of a space winery (badass), the one-time Starship Enterprise captain spends his days tending his crops, staring wistfully out of the window and ruminating on the fate of his dearly-departed cyborg mates.
But seems like not even Jean-Luc can stay retired, and the sudden appearance of a mysterious young woman — who the trailer strongly implies is some kinda super-Borg — sets a series of dramatic events in motion.
Oh, and those who worried the series’ name implied that this was going to be a largely solo outing can put their concerns aside: Data (Brent Spiner), Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), Hugh (Jonathan Del Arco), Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) and William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) have all been confirmed to be joining Stewart in the new series. Frakes is even directing a number of the ten episodes of the first season, making this something of a legacy project.
In fact, the whole beautiful affair basically sounds like pure Star Trek, and the trailer has all of the majesty and wonder that you’d expect would go along with that lofty name.
Watch the trailer below, and then start preparing for the premiere date, which will be some time in 2020.
