Phoebe Waller-Bridge Has Said That She Might Revisit ‘Fleabag’ But, Uh, Don’t Hold Your Breath
Season three might be coming... Eventually.
Fleabag, the groundbreaking television series starring and created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, has transformed into something of a sensation lately.
Beginning life as a monologue before becoming two seasons of the most insightful and intelligent TV that’s come along in ages, the show is unrivalled when it comes to nailing the peculiar anxieties of modern life. ‘Relatable’ is so often a dismissive and reductive term, but how else to describe a work that captures exactly what it means to be alive in this bizarre moment?
Indeed, the show’s been so critically adored that it seemed natural that Waller-Bridge would return to the writing desk and begin work on season three almost immediately.
Only, she hasn’t. In fact, Waller-Bridge has previously said that she has no plans whatsoever to return to the show, considering her work in that realm done.
Which is actually good, in a way. Think of all that TV which has dragged on so much further than its natural end (looking at you, The Simspons.) The best way that you can say goodbye to a show is to do so before you’ve grown tired of it, not afterwards, and the longer something is on the air, the more chance there is that it’ll disappoint you.
But hey, if you don’t agree, there is some hope. On a recent appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers, Waller-Bridge floated the idea that she would return to Fleabag — in a couple of decades time.
“I quite like the idea of coming back to her when I’m 50, because I feel like she would have had more life then,” the actress told Seth Meyers. “And God knows what she would have been up to. Playing a character like that in a later stage of life is exciting. But for now, she’s been through enough.”
