Too bad for those kids on Nauru though.

Home Affairs Minister and noted humanitarian Peter Dutton says he intervened to save a French au pair from deportation because he thought it was “a bit rough” to give the boot to a young woman with “no criminal history”.

Y’know, not like all those hardened criminal children we’re currently holding on Nauru.

Dutton has faced increasing scrutiny in recent weeks over three occasions in 2015 when he personally stepped in to ensure young women working as au pairs were granted visas. One of the women had previously worked for the family of Callum MacLachlan. MacLachlan’s second cousin is AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan, who reportedly lobbied Dutton’s office on the family’s behalf.

Moreover, Callum MacLachlan’s father Hugh has made around $150,000 worth of donations to the Liberal Party since 1999. And Callum himself donated $50,000 to the party’s South Australian branch six month’s after Dutton’s intervetion. But don’t worry, Peter Dutton insists that’s just a coincidence. Nothing to see here!

Speaking to 2GB radio on Thursday morning, Dutton said he looked at the McLachlan case and thought it was “common sense” that the woman be granted a tourist visa.

“I looked at it and thought it’s a bit rough, there’s no criminal history, she’s agreed that she wouldn’t work while she was here,” he said. “As I understand it, she never overstayed the visa, hasn’t committed any offences, and I thought it was an application of common sense.”

But Dutton’s comments seem a tad hypocritical given, well, basically everything else he’s ever done since being put in charge of Australia’s borders/prison camps.
