As an Australian, probably the most disappointing thing you’ve experienced using Maps on your phone is yelling “NEAREST MACCAS” into the mouthpiece and not being swiftly directed to the only thing you truly need at that moment. It’s universal knowledge the last thing any Aussie wants to do is spell out an entire damn word.

Google, pls.

Well, your fast food hopes and dreams won’t be crushed like that ever again — Google Maps has stopped being a bloody drongo and updated its voice recognition to understand and speak fluent Australian! Finally, you can immediately locate a servo, the closest Woolies, Brissy and the footy.

As well as the assistant’s ability to speak in a full blown ocker accent, she’s also been plugged with a bunch of Australian towns and suburbs she struggled to understand before, including Tibooburra, Unanderra, Warrangatta, Woolloomooloo and Woodenbong. It’s kind of unsurprising she couldn’t grasp that last one, though — it defies American stoner logic.

For some outrageous reason “chuck a u-ey” doesn’t register yet, but Google Australia spokesman Shane Treeves reckons there’s still hope.
