Police were called to respond to an attempted stabbing at a foster home around 4:30pm local time, according to The Columbus Dispatch.
Bryant had reportedly called emergency services because older kids had threatened her with assault.
Slowed down body cam footage shows police approaching a group of young people outside of a house before a gun was pulled out.
In a press conference, Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther said the “officers took action to protect another young girl.”
Bryant’s aunty told reporters that Bryant had dropped the knife before being shot multiple times by an unidentified white officer.
Her mother Paula described Ma’Khia as a “very loving, peaceful, little girl” who had a “motherly nature about her”.
“She promoted peace and that’s something I want to always be remembered,” her mother said.

Mayor Ginther asked residents to remain calm on Twitter while Ohio’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation looked into the matter.
This afternoon a young woman tragically lost her life. We do not know all of the details. There is body-worn camera footage of the incident. We are working to review it as soon as possible. BCI is on the scene conducting an independent investigation . . .

Bryant was killed the same day that former police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of George Floyd’s murder in Minneapolis.
They just killed another child. Nobody can sell me this verdict as progress when in the span of 2 weeks 2 children were killed by police. #SayHerName #MakiyahBryant
