Australia is rich with emerging fashion and design creatives looking to make their break into the industry. But their dreams are often thwarted by the realities of starting out – it can take a lot of day jobs and grind to get to the career they’re truly passionate about.

MINI have stepped in to relieve that pressure with their “Bright Rays” competition. Announced today, the MINI “Bright Rays” grant will fund a project by an emerging talent in fashion and design.

The winner will receive a $29,000 business grant towards their dream project and drive around a new MINI Ray for a year as they get their career moving. Their work will be covered by Junkee in a series of videos and articles, and they will also get crucial one-on-one time with a fashion and design mentor.

Gabrielle Byfield, the National Marketing Manager of MINI, is excited about how Australia’s emerging fashion and design stars will respond. “We’re looking for innovation, vibrant passion and an original creative vision,” she says.

MINI has gathered some of Australia’s brightest design talents as mentors: socially-minded designers Koskela, experimental dessert artist Katherine Sabbath, stylist and Joy Hysteric creator Mel Tan and colour maestro Tiff Manuell.

The design mentors will also be on hand to share their advice on the MINI “Bright Rays” website in a series of videos called “Daily Rays”. The videos are the inside word on how to make it in design and fashion as the mentors share how to stay inspired, motivated and divulge their favourite business tips.

To enter the competition head to the “Bright Rays” competition website and tell them about your dream project in 250 words or less and how the grant could help you.

Entries close on Sunday, October 16.
