Michael Hutchence is one of the most pure artistic talents in the history of Australian pop, so it makes sense that we’re still not done talking about him.

In the 22 years since the frontman of INXS passed away, he has been the subject of multiple books, profiles, critical unpickings, cover records and documentary films. The pinnacle of those takes is Mystify, an extraordinarily moving, feature-length film about his life and talent.

Stuffed with revealing interviews from his friends and collaborators, and carried off with a mix of strong research and genuine compassion for a man who had his struggles, there’s a reason it’s been acclaimed as one of the best music documentaries this country has produced.

One would assume that no small part of that is thanks to the film’s director, Richard Lowenstein. Lowenstein was a long-term friend and collaborator of Hutchence, and his work is suffused with a kind of intimacy that only comes as a result of those personal connections.

If you haven’t yet seen Mystify and all that is getting you fired up, then never fear: the film will air on ABC on Sunday November 24 at 8.40pm.

That means that it’ll land right in the middle of Australian music month. What better way to celebrate the fantastic pop that this country has produced than by bathing in the life story of one of its true pioneers?
