Legendary Footscray institution Olympic Doughnuts will not be re-opening this year, breaking the hearts of doughnut fans across Melbourne.

The shop has been run by owner Nick Tsiligiris since the 1970s. Today Maribyrnog City Council announced its closure, due to Nick’s ongoing health issues, on Facebook.

“Nick’s family would like to thank the community for their ongoing support, particularly those who have been devoted fans since the van first began rolling doughnuts in the 1970s,” the post read.

“As his daughter Gina said, ‘Nick loved his Footscray and it loved him back tenfold.'”

Local Labor MP Tim Watts has tweeted his farewell to Olympic Doughnuts.

Last year a documentary about Olympic Doughnuts called Olympic Nick – A Donutumentary was produced following a successful Pozible campaign.

In October last year a rumour began circulating that Nick had passed away. The Tsiligiris family confirmed the story was false and said they would announcing the future of Olympic Doughnuts “shortly”.

Sadly, it’s all over for Olympic Doughnuts, their delicious hot jam doughnuts and the famous dolphin jam dispenser.

We wish you all the best Nick, and we’ll all miss your doughnuts.
