Jeremy Renner is a good actor. The superhero Hawkeye is an interesting, fleshed-out character, with a fascinating backstory and an inimitable rogue’s gallery. But for whatever reason, the combination of these two things has resulted in one of the most laughably stale elements of the entire Marvel cinematic universe.

Since he first made an appearance in Thor, popping up in footage that was quite clearly shot after principal photography had already finished, Renner’s Hawkeye has been a grunty, square-jawed waste of space. He spent much of The Avengers as a glowy-eyed pawn to the evil Loki, and he wasn’t in Avengers: Infinity War at all. To that end, it’s always seemed like Marvel values the Hawkeye IP about as much as it values letting directors shoot their own action scenes — which is to say, not much at all.

Well, you’re joining me here on the breaking dawn of a new day, because Marvel have announced that an actual, honest-to-God, Hawkeye-led project is finally hitting our screens. That’s right: a Hawkeye television series, starring Renner himself, is due to premiere on Disney+.

Because this is Disney, details on the project itself are incredibly scarce. Variety reports that the show will probably run six to eight episodes, and that it will follow Hawkeye — AKA Clint Barton — as he hands over the bow and arrow to Kate Bishop, a character from the comics. That makes it sound like a Lone Wolf And Cub-style scenario, complete with padawan learning from the master — which could be interesting!

It also, of course, makes it seem pretty likely that Renner and his bow and arrow skills will make it out alive of the forthcoming Avengers: Endgame. That is, of course, unless the whole show is a prequel, in which case Hawkeye’s bold haircut might well be evaporated by the gloved hand of Thanos.

Disney+ is set to launch sometime this year, though the still-untitled Hawkeye show won’t reach us for some time after that.
