Naarm electronic duo m8riarchy make music for both the dance floor and the karaoke booth. They recently shared their club-ready new single, ‘Guessing’, as well as a remix of the track from legendary English producer Sunship. On ‘Guessing’, the pair blend together elements of UK garage and pop to create a song that will implore you to at least sway your hips. If you’re able to keep your body completely stiff when you’re listening to ‘Guessing’, then you may have powers of self-control that are beyond the comprehension of other humans (or you’re just not listening closely).

The pair will be launching ‘Guessing’ at an upcoming Naarm show, playing at Miscellania on October 20. The show’s set to feature a healthy dose of theatrics, choreography, and of course, bass. Nothing is complete without a little bit (or a lot) of bass. Ahead of the show, Junkee caught up with the pair to chat about trying to get the attention of celebrities using Instagram, getting really sick after drinking water and their ill-fated meeting with David Guetta.

Junkee: A mistake that turned into an opportunity?

Krissy: Sometimes the work you’re least proud of can turn into a masterpiece.

Tarsha: ‘Guessing’ was a jam session that we almost gave up on… Keep pushing!

Cringe quote you used to live by?

Tarsha & Krissy: Realising stuff!

Krissy: It’s from the Kylie Jenner archives — we’d love to read you the quote from her New Year’s Resolution that we wholeheartedly adopted back in 2016.

Tarsha: “I feel like this year is really about, like, the year of just realising stuff. And everyone around me, we’re all just, like, realising things.”

Worst advice you got and blindly followed?

Tarsha: Our friend told us to drink the local water on a holiday because it’s really good for your stomach and cleanses all the toxins.

Krissy: So anyway, we’re on this beautiful trip, drinking the tap water… of course spent the next three days violently ill! Never again.

The worst failure you’re up for sharing, and what you learned from it?

Krissy: We were invited to accompany some mates on a Euro leg of their tour. Tarsha and I were backstage with David Guetta. We were a bit chatty, high energy… We’re having a great time, dancing with his crew.

Tarsha: Then, I made the all-time fail “I don’t feel it yet, I’ll have another one.”

Next thing I know, I’ve turned into a complete toad, David and his mates have lost interest and we’ve been ushered back to the mainstage…

Krissy: Tarsha has learnt “pace yourself and don’t be greedy bitch”.

Anything you used to be wrong about?

Krissy: Taking on suggestions or guidance from important people with bad intentions.

Tarsha: We would encourage any babe to give music a shot, the stark reality of getting into those rooms with important people doesn’t always lead to opportunities…

Krissy: Your time is so much more valuable than being led astray by people stroking their ego!

Embarrassing internet habit?

Tarsha: I follow my crushes and comment on their posts hoping they’ll respond. Shoutout to Jaguar and Idris Elba… I mean well!

Krissy: Omg… I do that too!

Ideal morning routine versus actual morning routine?

Tarsha: I’m fully committed to my morning routine! I start with one litre of water, a stretch, journaling then coffee.

Krissy: I like a healthy mix of blueberry nicotine and coffee… A stimulating start to the day.

Something very off-brand for you?

Tarsha: The m8riarchy [brand] is all about indulgence, self-care, celebration and pampering. However… Krissy loves hoeing into a bachelor’s handbag from Coles. No sauce, no cutlery… She just goes for it!

Krissy: Tarsha buys a $1 scratchie from Northland shopping centre every week, religiously, and never wins!

Bad health decision?

Tarsha: Not knowing when to call it and get enough sleep!

Krissy: *exhales vape smoke* I don’t think I have any?

What do you waste money on?

Krissy: Well it’s more of an investment than a waste… We both bought Dysons and love them!

Tarsha: Dyson, if you’re listening, we have a jingle for you! Hit us up!

Worst procrastination habit?

Tarsha: Best mates making music together — there’s a fine line between work and play…

Krissy: We always get sidetracked having too much fun!

m8riarchy are set to launch their new single, Guessing, at Naarm’s Miscellania on Friday, October 20. You can learn more about the gig here.
