Let’s Celebrate Margaret And David’s Last Day With Some Graphs Of Everything They’ve Ever Said

The thing which divided them the most over the years? Vin Diesel.

This is it, people. Tonight’s the night. At 9.30pm Margaret Pomeranz and David Stratton will say a final goodbye to 11 years of At The Movies, a total of 28 years presenting reviews together, and an epic lifetime of delicious unresolved sexual tension. Prepare yourselves for a bit of lip quivering, single tear-shedding action; this is going to be some Liv Tyler in Armageddon-level woe.

While tonight’s episode will be a one-hour special of bonus footage, bloopers and end-of-year recaps, it’s important to keep in mind the long legacy that the pair are actually leaving behind. They’ve reviewed thousands of films together. They were a living, breathing IMDB before the Internet was even a thing.

To celebrate this and commemorate their huge undertakings over the years, the ABC has today compiled a comprehensive set of data from the pair’s last 1,925 reviews. The results are a mammoth, 11-year mountain of serious knowledge, flirtatious bickering and serious love of arthouse films.

We’ve never been more intrigued by a series of dots.

David has no time for the teens.

When you play around with the data on the ABC website you can rank the ratings by reviewer preference or the categories which have been the most divisive. So, when looking at their opinions on certain genres you can see that the two really can’t decide on teen films, and David loves himself some cartoons.

All in all, there’s a lot to speculate about. For instance when looking at directors, it’s no surprise that they’ve had no love for Kevin Smith — at this point, who does? — but they’re also totally divided on much celebrated auteurs like Clint Eastwood and Martin Scorsese. With David consistently rating the two directors much higher than Margaret, could it be an issue of gender that separates the two?

Spoiler: Woody Allen is controversial no matter who you ask.

The data is so detailed in fact that it even combs through their opinions on individual actors. Contentious stars here include Ryan Gosling, Meryl Streep, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kirsten Dunst to name a few. But the most divisive? Vin Diesel.

“I actually think Vin Diesel has something,” Margaret said. “I feel a certain safeness with him on screen.” When David asked if she wanted Vin Diesel to come and rescue her, she said yes. “He’s got a real solidarity about him that I trust.”

If you squint, you can see the DNA of Margaret and David’s potential child.

Verdict: Vin Diesel is a better actor than Meryl Streep. Deal with it.

When it comes down to it, anyone who can make a defence of this guy sound intelligent is someone whose worth having around. They’ll be sorely missed.
