Jay Z Loses His Cool; Sings And Dances With Dorky, Unbridled Adoration During Beyonce’s Phenomenal ‘Made In America’ Set
It was her first proper concert of 2015. Apparently it was mindblowing.
This weekend was notable for two Beyonce-related reasons.
The first: she celebrated her 34th birthday, which was honoured by a handpicked (and publicly available) playlist from her family and friends, and an adorable hand-made card, courtesy of he three-year old, Blue Ivy Carter (who chose The Little Mermaid’s ‘Part Of Your World’, ARGH).
The second: she headlined the first day of Jay-Z’s Made In America Festival, which took place on Saturday and Sunday in Philadelphia.
In what has been widely-reported to be a spectacular set, it was also Beyonce’s first major show this year — including eight costume-changes, a hit-packed setlist, some Destiny’s Child flashbacks (‘Jumpin’ Jumpin’ and ‘Say My Name’), and a striking visual show. While there were no new songs premiered, a heap of previously unseen footage was projected onto the screens — including a clip of Beyonce walking along East River with a birthday cake balanced on her head.
The Beyonce live show has included audio from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s TED Talk for a few years now, but she introduced a couple more feminist snippets on the weekend: a sample of Maya Angelou’s 1995 poem ‘Phenomenal Woman’, and a cut from a UFC champion Ronda Rousey’s infamous ‘Do Nothing Bitches’ speech — “Just because my body was developed for a purpose other than fucking millionaires, doesn’t mean it’s masculine” — which Beyonce used to lead into a performance of ‘Diva’.
If Twitter is anything to go by, tens of thousands of audience members lost their mind at the show — but according to footage that surfaced overnight, among them was her husband Jay Z: clad in an unconvincing, hoodie-topped disguise as “just an every-day member of the public, who knows all the words to ‘1+1’ and has love hearts for eyeballs”.
(Nick Jonas, standing next to him, is evidently more of a Delta kinda guy.)

And here’s Jay Z again, thoroughly enjoying ‘7/11’.
