You know how  in some Eastern European countries they’re only just getting 90210, and everyone is rocking double denim while catching up on Brandon and Brenda’s fresh-faced adventures at West Beverly High? Well, it looks like the ‘90s took a long time to arrive at Virginia Polytechnic and State University.

Earlier today, iconic record label Sub Pop received a message from a student at the university, asking for a teeny, tiny favour: a shout-out from Nirvana.

The student asked if Kurt and the guys would be kind enough to record a video message for the university’s Homecoming Week, to feature in a montage alongside Big N Rich, Ying Yang Twins, and “three famous NFL Players”.

“Virginia tech loves Nirvana, and we’d love to have her in our video,” the message said. The writer was even kind enough to provide a script for the guys to read:

“It would simply be ‘What’s up Virginia Tech? This is Nirvana! Just wanted to wish you guys a Happy Homecoming Week and good luck at the game this Saturday. LET’S GO HOKIES!'”

Unwilling to let a little thing like Kurt Cobain’s death in 1994 crush the hopes and dreams of a starry-eyed Nirvana fan, the staff at Sub Pop went ahead and recorded that video.

It probably would have been cooler with Dave Grohl, but few things aren’t. LET’S GO HOAGIES!
