There’s some sick and twisted members of the Teen Beach Movie cult of the internet popping the sacred words ‘High School Musical‘ in their mouths, swishing them around and spitting them in the sink with a vicious velocity. And I’m not gonna stand for the slander.

The accusation that Teen Beach Movie (2013) could hold even a flameless LED tealight let alone a proper candle to the legacy of the High School Musical franchise is actually quite a funny little joke when you apply a bit of critical thinking.

High School Musical (2006) reached an audience of 7.7 million viewers in its premiere broadcast when it aired in the summer of 2006. The lead single from the film, ‘Breaking Free’ reached #4 on the Billboard Hottest 100 in the same year and won Soundtrack of the Year at the Billboard Music Awards. The film also won an Emmy for choreography. That one goes out to Kenny Ortega

High School Musical 2 reached 17.2 million viewers in its initial broadcast. And as a result of this success, High School Musical 3: Senior Year earned itself a theatrical release, grossing $252 million worldwide. That’s just shy of what Elvis (2022) made. And Teen Beach Movie? Has Jordan Fisher in it.

Teen Beach Movie stans wheel out this same clip of ‘Cruisin’ For A Bruisin’’ anytime they’re trying to convince someone that the movie is worth the surfboard it rode in on and there’s no other scene that makes me turn inside out like a slug you’ve poured salt onto.

The cringe is actually unbearable. It’s like Grease (which is good) but it’s Grease 2 (which is hellfire) but it’s the Glee Cast version (which makes it kind of good again) but then you put everyone in cheap party shop costumes and mandated a no-rizz rule.

As for the argument that Ross Lynch could do High School Musical but Zac Efron couldn’t do Teen Beach Movie, back it up for a sec. May I gently remind you that Zac Efron starred in both Hairspray and The Greatest Showman, solidifying him as a musical actor who more than deserves his crown. He owns this genre. And as for beach? His job has been beach before, and he owned that too.
