Here’s Downton Abbey As A New York Musical

“American’s have always been resentful that the English get to see Downton Abbey first,” introduces Julian Fellowes (played by Colin Mochrie). “We finished filming sereies four, and I conceived of this idea of doing a staged exhibition of the first episode… And, it’s a musical episode!”

There are so many good moments in this spoof. The love ballads, the “gay notes”, the ghost duet, and the line, “One of the things I love about Maggie, is that she has no sense of what her face is doing.” And when poor, ugly Edith is suddenly attacked by three men vying for her attention.

Mr Gregson: “Edith dear, I must confess: I love you more than my printing press!”

Sir Antony: “I’ve changed my mind, and I’m back again. Pick up my cane and put down your pen!”

Mosely: “Edith, let me cleanse this palette. For you I’ll be more than just a valet.”

Crib notes: the teabag represents the relentless march of modernity as it encroaches on English tradition, because that seems to be the only thing that Downton Abbey is actually about.
