Over the weekend, Netflix released the long-awaited second instalment of The Haunting franchise, The Haunting Of Bly Manor.

Following the super-popular and ghost-packed The Haunting of Hill House, which was a modern adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s novel of the same name, Netflix finally dropped The Haunting Of Bly Manor. But while also loosely based on a novel (Henry James’ The Turn of The Screw), Bly Manor is actually not related to the first series in any way.

Starting afresh, Bly Manor tells the spooky gothic romance story of Dani Clayton, who becomes a live-in nanny for orphaned Flora and Miles Wingrave at the Bly estate in the ’80s.

But as Bly Manor is part of the The Haunting franchise, Dani obviously encounters a number of supernatural experiences while at the estate — including seeing people that no one else can, like her ex-fiancé with glowing yellow eyes who appears in mirrors.

Despite being joined by a friendly but never-hungry housekeeper, the oddly calm family chef and the hot gardener at the property, Dani soon realises that Bly manor is extremely haunted and that the Wingrave children are, well, scary as hell.

With last the governess committing suicide mere months before Dani started her au pair job, Dani starts to learn more horrifying things about the manor with each passing day — like Miles getting expelled for literally trying to murder someone in his class.

But even though the Bly Manor is shrouded in horror, the nine-episode series actually manages to end in a strangely bittersweet and emotional way, which is something that fans of The Haunting franchise didn’t really expect to see.

So as you deal with the unexpectedly emotional aftermath of the series, here are the best reactions to the oddly sweet, but still terrifying season of The Haunting of Bly Manor.

(As expected, mild spoilers ahead.)
