Hannah Gadsby Completely Forgot To Plug Her New Show In This Lovely Interview With Leigh Sales
"The show is going to pick up in a way where Nanette left off."
Comedian Hannah Gadsby has opened up about her difficult relationship with fame following the spectacular success of her show Nanette, in a frank and funny interview with 7.30 host Leigh Sales.
“[It’s been] disorientating at best,” Gadsby told Sales of her new celebrity status. “It’s quite difficult to be an unassuming sort of person and be in a very assuming position. I’m trying to be humble and I’m finding it easier to just hide. So I’ve been spending a lot of time on my own, not networking, which is a real waste of my moment.”
“I’ve learnt to really use the word ‘no’ a lot,” the comedian continued. “I’ve been asked to do things that I would have once jumped at the chance of doing and it’s really kind of hard to strike that balance. I am experiencing this incredible success but it came at such a price. You know, it wasn’t fun to do. So I’m trying to enjoy it and then I think about what I did and I go, ‘oooh, I need a nap’.”
Gadsby also gave a plug to her recently announced new show… although only after Sales reminded her to do so.
“Is there a new show imminent,” asked the journalist.
“Oh yes, I think that’s why I’m here,” Gadsby replied. “I’m promoting my tour, aren’t I. And you were edging toward it and I forgot to mention it.”
“I just sent you a nice underarm bowl to help you” Sales joked.
According to Gadsby, the new show, titled Douglas, is “pretty much about my inability to operate in the world”.
“The show is going to pick up in a way where Nanette left off,” she explained. “I don’t need to talk about my own traumas on stage anymore. But it is looking at stories with an outward view. So I’m using a little bit more art history. Having a chat. I’ll probably talk about my dog a lot. It’s named after my dog, Douglas. So I think that’s what’s on my mind.”
