A film prequel to Grease titled Summer Loving is in the works, focusing on when Sandy and Danny first met, as summarised pretty accurately in Grease song ‘Summer Loving’. As you can imagine, fans of the classic are a little confused as to where the film can go.

Green-lit by Paramount Players, the plot of Summer Loving is in the hands of frequent Tim Burton collaborator and veteran screenwriter John August (Big Fish, 2005’s Charlie And The Chocolate Factory). Little else has been revealed at this point, but the internet’s already skeptical, since as an idea, a prequel seems just a touch redundant.

August has the skeleton for the film already, we assume, since ‘Summer Loving’, the duet where Sandy and Danny tell their friends about their fling, really spells it all out. Sandy, the beachy Australian who can’t swim, got a cramp at the beach, and Danny “saved her life”, then everything else “happened so fast”. We also look forward to the scenes where they go bowling in the arcade, strolling, drink lemonade and make out under the dock.

And then, um, nothing? The film ends with them saying goodbye before they end up at school together?

And yes, while the whole bit of ‘Summer Loving’ is that Sandy and Danny’s verses don’t quite match up, we aren’t really supposed to know what exactly happened.

The reality’s likely somewhere in the middle of the two versions, with Sandy probably overselling her virtuousness and Danny talking a big game to impress the T-Birds. Why would we need to find out the truth?

We’re sure the film — which hasn’t been confirmed to be a musical — will expand on the song’s plot and become its own thing, akin to the relationship between Blade Runner 2049 and Blade Runner. Or perhaps, like each entry in Linklater’s Before Trilogy, Summer Loving will expand greatly upon  Grease and Grease 2, completely changing how we watch them.

Or, as Jeff Widman suggests, maybe it’s just soft-core porn.

Still, maybe Augusts’ talents would be better served in solving Grease‘s cliffhanger ending — did Danny and Sandy safely land their flying car?
