All good things must come to an end, and good places are no exception.

Yesterday afternoon, show creator Michael Schur announced that The Good Place‘s next season will be its last, bringing Team Cockroach’s adventures through the afterlife to an end after four seasons. In a statement released via The Good Place‘s official Twitter, Schur revealed that bringing the show to an end after around 50 episodes had been the plan since season two.

“Given the ideas we wanted to explore, and the pace at which we wanted to present those ideas, I began to feel like four seasons — just over 50 episodes — was the right lifespan,” wrote Schur.

“At times over the past few years we’ve been tempted to go beyond four seasons, but mostly because making this show is a rare, creatively fulfilling joy, and at the end of the day, we don’t want to tread water just because the water is so warm and pleasant.”

It’s upsetting that we’ll soon say “goodbye Chidi” for good, but ending in this manner is the best possible outcome for the beloved show. General fan sentiment is that bringing The Good Place to a natural conclusion is much preferable to dragging it out, which would likely cause the show’s quality to suffer.

Further, ending the show on its own terms will allow The Good Place‘s team to wrap it up in a satisfactory manner. Too many shows have ended on a whimper after an abrupt cancellation. It’s comforting to know that, though we’ll only get four seasons, The Good Place will likely remain a good show right up until its death.

Even though it will be ending on a high note, it’s still sad to see such a beloved show end at all. Since 2016, The Good Place has been consistently funny, at times heart wrenching and often deeply relatable. On top of game changing plot twists, the show gave us extremely questionable Australian accents, Chidi’s abs and not-a-robot queen Janet.

It also made the words “Jeremy Bearimy” incredibly sad, which is a writing achievement unto itself.

The Good Place season four will return this spring, after which the show will move on to its own Good Place. Hopefully a real one, without frozen yoghurt.
