Gang of Youths fans can stream the band’s sold-out London gig this weekend, thanks to the power of TikTok. The headline show is the band’s first in two years, filmed in the “intimate space” of Lafayette in the UK.

Australians will be able to tune in at 7pm on Sunday, August 15 for the show, which promises to contain both new and old material.

The streamed gig is one of many unusual marketing methods the band have used over the last few months. Who can forget, after all, their secret hotline number, which fans could call to hear a snippet of their then-new material?

“We wanted you wonderful people who have supported us to be able to tune in to our first show back, no matter where you live,” the band have said in a statement. “Hopefully we can do it in person as soon as possible. Keep safe and enjoy the show.”

The band have been on a roll as of late, releasing tender and heartfelt new material, culminating in their Total Serene EP. When it was first released, we called it “as simple as a William Carlos Williams poem — as direct as a love letter” and noted that “across a mere three tracks, it builds an entire world, one that acknowledges pain and heartbreak while never becoming defined by it.”

That’s a tricky line to walk, but Gang of Youths have spent their entire career walking it, and here their melancholy acknowledgement that life sometimes holds unwanted surprises has been elevated to the mythic. ‘The angel of 8th ave.’ isn’t just a story of love and loss, it’s one written in clouds; something elemental drawn to the fore and made concrete. Frontman Dave Le’aupepe’s voice has rarely sounded quite this confident, pulling poetry from the air around him, nailing the listener to a time, a place, and a feeling.

The streamed gig doesn’t seem to be the end of upcoming Gang of Youths delights either — a new album is still on the way.
