The Feed has ripped into the Liberal Party over its handling of the situation on Nauru, airing a brutal sketch featuring a pair of government MPs, one of whom sounds suspiciously like former Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

The sketch stars comedians Alex Lee and Cameron James as a pair of politicians trying desperately to sell the party’s policy of locking children in tropical gulags. Only James can’t quite seem to get the message right.

“It’s a gorgeous place,” he insists. “Very pleasant island. I’ve spent some time there… well, I flew over the top of it on my way to a couples only retreat in Fiji with my chief of staff.”

His comments echo those of the real life Abbott, who came under fire earlier this week for calling Nauru “a very pleasant island”. This is in spite of the fact that nearly six thousand doctors have signed an open letter calling for asylum seeker children to be evacuated over concerns about their health.

After suggesting the kids on Nauru might not be quite so innocent (“who knows what they’re cooking up in their cells!”) James admits he’s a little confused about what he’s meant to be saying.

“We’re very against people dying at sea,” explains Lee.

“But dying on an island?” her hapless colleague asks.

“…preferable,” she replies.

“And we can’t bring the boat kids here because then we look like… border sissies?”

“If we bring the kids here, we really have to do it quietly, without making a big deal out of it,” she says.

“Got it, we sneak them in,” says James, understanding at last. “We can put little blond wigs on them, say they’re British backpackers?”
