The Exorcist
Sandy George, SBS
Most of my early big-screen experiences were at the Bordertown Drive-In in South Australia, and it was there I saw The Exorcist. While watching Wiliam Friedkin’s exploration of evil, something happened onscreen to make me throw up my hands in horror – and one of those hands held a cigarette which hit the ceiling.
When the embers rained down on me, I was sure there was something not of this world in the car with us, and panic overtook me. That night I hardly slept a wink, and it took years to agree to go to scary movies again. Now, if something is proving too much for my nerves, I use my knowledge of filmmaking to analyse how each sequence was written, filmed and edited.
