Eight Australian Films That Prove We Can Do Pretty Great Sci-Fi
'The Infinite Man' is just the latest of a pretty stellar run of Australian sci-fi movies.
Predestination (2014)
In a rare moment of serendipity, a second Aussie sci-fi film was released into cinemas just a few weeks ago. The Spierig Brothers’ Predestination takes a Robert A Heinlein short story from 1959, All You Zombies, and reconfigures it slightly.
Set in New York City, but filmed in Melbourne (the RMIT Design Hub building, with its distinctive circular exterior, features prominently), it’s stylish and elaborately plotted even if it never quite comes together. The directors, who also made the sci-fi vampire tale Daybreakers (2009), rely too much on the story’s twist, which most viewers should figure out pretty early. Still entertaining to watch it unfold though.
