The Durian fruit is famous for being extremely smelly when ripe, and apparently when they’re secretly rotting somewhere they smell so bad that people have to evacuate the building. Yikes.

On Saturday, approximately 500 people were evacuated from the RMIT campus in Melbourne, after the smell of “gas” was reported in the library. It’s unclear why 500 nerds were in the library on a Saturday.

Firefighters donned protective breathing apparatus to investigate the source of the stench, taking severe precautions as the campus sometimes stored dangerous chemicals.

After a rigorous search, the firefighters discovered that the source of the smell was from the gas of the rotting Durian, hidden in a cupboard somewhere. In a sense, it was still a gas leak.

A statement from the Fire Brigade said the smell had moved around the building through the air conditioning system.

There has been no word yet on whether the hidden Durian was an extremely wholesome form of revenge, or the remnants of the worlds worst secret library picnic.
