‘Donnie Darko’ Is Returning To Cinemas Soon To Confuse Us All Over Again
*'Mad World' plays in the background*
In 2001, teenagers sat on MSN Messenger and discussed a new movie that they all pretended to understand, called Donnie Darko. As long as you got a few key words in — “scary rabbit”, “vortex”, “jet engine” and “Drew Barrymore” would do — you could convincingly fake an opinion about one of the most impenetrable films of the 2000s.

Haha, what a classic scene.
Well dust off your cue cards friends, because Richard Kelly’s Donnie Darko is coming back to cinemas! To celebrate its 15th anniversary, Madman is presenting screenings next week in Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales, Western Australia, South Australia and Queensland (sorry, NT). It’ll be interesting to see if it holds up (and if the ‘Mad World’ cover still feels deeply profound).
For those who managed to dodge Donnie Darko the first time around, it’s a story about a troubled teenager called Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal) who one day starts having visions of a terrifying rabbit called Frank. Creepy shit ensues.
