Fresh off the back of its Oscar win for Best Adapted Screenplay, Call Me By Your Name is getting a sequel. Maybe more than one. And fans are freaking out, because when has departing from the source material to stretch out awards season success for as long as possible ever resulted in an actual good film?

Director Luca Guadagnino confirmed the sequel yesterday on the Oscars red carpet, and told reporters “it’s gonna be a new movie, a different tone”. He also said he was working with the novel’s author André Aciman to develop the story, which is good news for fans of the book.

Guadagnino also dropped quite a few hints about what will actually happen in the sequel. It will take place 5-6 years after the original film, when Elio is around 25, and Guadagnino is hoping to film it when lead actor Timothée Chalamet is also that age (3-4 years from now).

Armie Hammer will also apparently return, and in Guadagnino’s words, “they’re gonna go around the world” — in other words, it looks like there’s a real good chance Oliver and Elio will get back together.

In a previous interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Guadagnino has also hinted that he’d like a Call Me By Your Name sequel to explore the AIDS epidemic, describing what he pictures as the sequel’s opening scene: “”I think Elio will be a cinephile, and I’d like him to be in a movie theater watching Paul Vecchiali’s Once More,” which was the first French film to openly address AIDS.

“In my opinion, Call Me can be the first chapter of the chronicles of the life of these people that we met in this movie, and if the first one is a story of coming of age and becoming a young man, maybe the next chapter will be, what is the position of the young man in the world, what does he want — and what is left a few years later of such an emotional punch that made him who he is?”

In short, it looks like this sequel is definitely happening. Please let them not fuck it up.
