Has a show ever so artfully defied expectations as Bojack Horseman?

When the animated comedy first debuted on Netflix, it seemed like a low-rent Adult Swim rip-off, obsessed with fairly underwhelming puns and characters who dropped punchlines with all the art of movers accidentally knocking a piano down a flight of stairs.

But within its very first three episodes, the series started to change. Quickly, it wasn’t about the jokes — though there were still a lot of those, funnier every single episode. It was about Bojack, a loveable — but only sometimes — fuck-up who hurt those around him as a way of putting off the hard work of looking at himself. Suddenly, before you even knew what had happened, that so-called low-rent Adult Swim rip-off had you in tears.

That evolution hasn’t slowed down over the next five seasons of TV, either. There’s no show more dedicated to upending your guesses about which direction things are going to take: bad characters redeem themselves, good characters go corrupt, and fortune favours the cowardly instead of the bold.

Well, it looks like that’s the way the sixth and final season is going to go as well. The first trailer is scant on exact plot details, but the vibe is singularly heartbreaking. Bojack Horseman is in rehab, trying to find out what made him fall in love with the art of acting in the first place. Diane is being, well, Diane, trying to navigate work and love. And Mr. Peanutbutter is slowly realising that maybe his goofy exterior is hiding a great, throbbing well of hurt.

So yeah, you’d do well to expect that this thing will break your heart, is what I’m saying.

The sixth season has been split into two sections. The first will drop on October 25, and the second on January 31. Watch the trailer below:
