Bad Boys, directed by explosions afficianado Michael Bay and starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, might be the most quintessentially nineties film of that decade.

The movie has it all, from an ear drum-shattering array of explosions, to a bevy of flashy cars, to enough quips to give you significant motion sickness. As Jaws is to shark movies, so Bad Boys is to astonishingly, invigoratingly stupid action flicks.

Which might well explain why its sequel, Bad Boys II, released in 2003, was nowhere near as successful commercially or critically. Even eight years after the first film was released, the culture was so completely changed that a movie about Lawrence and Smith walking in slow-motion away from pyrotechnics felt oddly anachronistic.

Well, in the following 16 years, culture has only got stupider and more regressive. So, it kinda makes sense that Lawrence and Smith have struck when the iron is silly and released Bad Boys For Life, the third film in an extremely slow-moving franchise.

The plot for the upcoming film is paper thin. There’s barely any of it in the trailer, and even the official synopsis is vague, promising that the buddies will “unite again when a Romanian mob boss, whose brother they defeated, promises them an important bonus in revenge.”

But let’s be real. This series has never been about dense narrative storytelling, or even character. It’s been about watching two very funny men say a bunch of very funny things as the world around them is decomposed into smaller pieces with the help of fire and gunpowder. And on that point, the trailer totally succeeds.

We’ll find out exactly how fun all this fire and fury will turn out to be when the film releases in January 2020. Till then, feast your eyes on the sheer inanity of the thing right here:
