Avengers: Endgame was something of a finale for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Of course, nobody believes that the franchise is actually taking even a slight break — there’s a new Spider-Man movie due out in like, three months, and Marvel has announced new movies stretching all the way into 2022.

But, at the very least, Endgame was a goodbye to some of its key players, and a shifting of gears. One stage of the story is done (probably not for good; wait till Robert Downey Jr. gets lured back to reprise Iron Man as a cameo in ten years), and a new stage of the story has only just begun.

As a result of that changing of the guard, everyone is feeling a little bit nostalgic. Indeed, even some of the franchise’s major craftsmen are taking the opportunity to look back, with the Russo brothers, the directors of Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, not to mention The Winter Soldier, sitting down for a wide-ranging interview with GQ in which they pick apart the legacy of some of Marvel Studio’s biggest moments.

The video kicks off with an unpicking of the finale to Iron Man, because how could it not? If that risky endeavour of a film had flopped, we would be living in a significantly less superhero saturated world — there’s no way Marvel would have had the faith to launch a Thor vehicle if Iron Man hadn’t worked out for them.

From there, the Russos go on to talk about their own key contribution to the Marvel story — the elevator fight scene that they directed in Winter Soldier, which has now gone on to be described as one of the most kinetic action scenes in the whole MCU.

Basically, the whole video is a treat, packed with gems and insights that you won’t get anywhere else. Sure, it’s half an hour long, but hey, it’s a Friday — make some time for yourself and watch it all the way through.
