The ‘Alice Through The Looking Glass’ Trailer Is Pretty Druggy, Hey

The trailer for Tim Burton’s Alice Through the Looking Glass has just been released in all its sensory distorting glory, coming six years after Burton’s first Alice in Wonderland film. The sequel once again stars ‘our’ Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter, and also features Alan Rickman in his last film role (tear).

The strangest thing about this trailer is how chill Disney seems to be with the obvious drug references—I mean, including a cover of Jefferson Airplane’s ‘White Rabbit’, a song that really transformed Alice in Wonderland imagery into shorthand for talking about hallucinogens, is pretty bold! It’s hard to get the allusion out of your head when Alice is walking through dissolved mirrors and watching literal time move around her.

Through the Looking Glass looks a lot more interesting than the last film, because Alice isn’t just sort of wandering around wide-eyed at the strange world around her, she’s actively doing things—like for instance, spectacularly escaping from a mental asylum. Alice is just a girl who’s been through some fucked up shit, who is sick of being subjugated by The Man, you know.

Alice Through the Looking Glass comes out July 14.
