In case you need more evidence of the massive impact the AFLW competition has had on a generation of young footy fans, an inventive little girl has told Channel 7’s Hamish McLachlan how she’s started converting her Barbie dolls into football players.

Young Abbie was interviewed during last night’s AFL game between Port Adelaide and North Melbourne, and let me tell you now, it was absolutely adorable. First she told McLachlan how meeting GWS Giants player Amanda Farrugia inspired her to take up Auskick, before showing off a couple of her Barbies — one dressed like Tayla Harris from Carlton, and the other Bec Beeson from the Giants.

“How many of these Barbies have you converted?” McLachlan asked her.

“About seven or eight,” Abbie replied.

The interview was soon seen by Harris herself, who seemed to approve of Abbie’s efforts.

Harris has become one of the main faces of the AFLW competition after speaking out about the online abuse she faced when a photo of her went viral.

Abbie’s interview was widely shared on social media, with many fans pointing to it as a prime example of why the women’s competition is so important.
