The Giant ABC Scandal Now Involves Kylie Minogue, For Some Reason
Uh... what?
In what is definitely one of the weirder twists to come out of the ABC leadership crisis, it has been revealed that former chairman Justin Milne wanted to hire pop star Kylie Minogue to sing about the public broadcaster before the idea was shot down by senior management.
According to a report by Fairfax, Milne wanted to recruit Minogue as part of a major advertising campaign that would have cost around $3 million — including $750,000 for Minogue. But the plan did not go over well with former managing director Michelle Guthrie, who is said to have “hit the roof” when she found out about it.
Guthrie was sacked last month after the board decided that her leadership was no longer in the best interest of the ABC. Milne followed her out the door a couple of days later after it emerged that he attempted to get political journalist Emma Alberici sacked because the government complained about her reporting.
According to a source close to Guthrie, Milne approached the ABC’s financial team to cost the Minogue proposal. Milne denied this but conceded he had not spoken to Guthrie about the plan.
“I think Michelle was away at the time,” he told Fairfax.
Milne also denied the proposal was his to begin with, although he did say he thought “an emotional campaign with Kylie singing a song … could be cool”.
I guess we’ll never know.
