Student hubs are one of the biggest mysteries of campus life. They’re always full of people and yet, no one you know ever hangs out there.

There are so many questions about the “student hub” we’re yet to answer.

#1 “What Is The Student Hub?”

It’s not the pub, it’s not the library and it’s not the quad. It seems to be some sort of unspecified area between those three things that boasts lots of weird-shaped chairs, microwaves and power outlets to charge your phone. And there are games? But people hardly ever play them?

#2 “Am I Cool Enough To Hang Out Here?”

Hanging out in the student hub is such a foreign concept to you that anyone who does it has a special kind of confidence. They don’t walk in, look at all the people and panic like you do. They waltz in, say hi to a random guy with a PC laptop and plop themselves down on the end of the nearest couch. It doesn’t matter that there are other strangers already on that couch! They’re a student hub person. They don’t care.

#3 “Why Is That Guy Always Here?”

We said earlier that no one you know ever hangs out at the student hub, but that’s a lie. There’s always one guy you met in a tute or attended a club meet up with ONCE that seems to hang out there all the time. Every time you walk past you see them talking to another student hub person, or playing a game

#4 “Who Has The Time For This?”

Honestly, who is finishing up with their tutes and making a beeline for the student hub? Why aren’t these people just going straight home? And/or killing time stress-eating Subway sandwiches and frantically catching up on their readings?

Are these people so organised that they have nothing else to worry about but a game of foozball? Do they have jobs? Families? It’s a mystery.

#5 “Why Is Everyone Friends With Each Other?”

Student hub people always hang out in groups. Where did they meet? In class? In high school? Did they just spark up conversation in the student hub one day? Are their student hub meet ups that none of the rest of us know about? Is it a secret society that you have to be inducted in to?

#6 “Was There Some Kind Of Student Hub Orientation I Haven’t Heard About?”

OK, who is telling all of these people to hang out here? I know that we went past the student hub on the campus tour but I thought we all agreed it was an afterthought? Kind of like the side salad you get with your schnitty.

#7 “Is That Person Sleeping?”

I… think they’re sleeping.
