5 Ways To Stop Your First Date From Getting Super Awkward
For the love of god, stay off your phone.

First dates can go down hill very quickly. Especially if the only connection you’ve had with your date beforehand was an exchange of wits on tinder.
More often than not, people are a lot different to their online persona. Here’s a couple tips to help you survive a very first date without it descending into awkward, stilted conversation.
#1 Embrace Your Quirky Traits
Don’t try to downplay your personality on your first date because it takes up too much brain power. Not only will you feel drained, but your date is more likely to find those quirky traits endearing. And if they don’t, it’s good to know that they’re not really worth your time.
Honestly, it’s the best time to let your crazy flag fly. Come out with guns blazing, telling your silliest stories and being your funnest self.
#2 Use Your Imagination
Steer clear of the stereotypical dinner and a movie, it’s been done way too many times. Take your date on an activity that’s fun and exciting so there’s no room for it to get awkward.
Think about what they’ve told you about their interests and tailor it to that. If you’re not sure, you could go rock climbing or hiking, or take them to a hidden bookshop. Something that’s sure to be a talking point. The thought and effort you put in will not go unnoticed.
#3 Utilise Those Icebreakers
Yeah, it’s a little bit lame but a good ol’ get-to-know-you game is a great way to get the conversation going. It’s a ridiculously easy way to open up to someone and figure out the basics of who they are while also letting them know a little about you too.
If you struggle to come up with anything, there are plenty of apps out there that can help you out. One I’d highly recommend is called The And which asks a series of no bullshit questions that helps you know more about every person in your life.
#4 Listen And Ask Questions
This seems like a no brainer, but it’s less common than you’d think. Actually pay attention to what your date is saying and retain that information. If you can bring up details about their life later on in the conversation, you’ll gain serious brownie points.
Also, it’ll give you more material to bounce off and ask them about. You’ll soon find the conversation is flowing and you’ve got a real back and forth going.
#5 Get Off Your Phone
No texting. No Instagram. No snapchatting. Just give your full attention to your date. If they aren’t paying you the same courtesy, don’t be offended. It’s no secret we’re a generation glued to our technology so your date probably doesn’t even notice what they are doing.
But there’s nothing more excruciating than sitting across from someone who’s absorbed in their phone. Gently remind them that you’re, uh, there by suggesting you both shut off your phones for the time being. You could even make it a game to see who can go the longest without touching their device (and if you’re both extra competitive you can agree to make the loser pay for the date).
